Contemporary Landscapes

by British Artist Louise Bougourd

Using colour, light & movement in my painting to represent the natural world

"Louise Bougourd’s work explores the relationship between man and nature. Bougourd herself has a powerful connection to landscape, which is transposed in her atmospheric paintings. She is interested in the way man compulsively creates, destroys, and erects within the landscape and it’s gradual, soft reclamation of these changes. Instead of seeing the landscape as a battle ground, Bougourd explores it as a creative duet. Both elements, man and nature, combining to lay down a narrative of transformation."

Drawn from the Landscape

My inspiration is drawn from the landscape and the inner landscape of the human condition, my emotional response to place fascinates me, spending time on location is important to my process permitting me to absorb, feel and then respond.

My process reflects responses to land and emotion. My process always begins with quick mark-making and sketches recording a moment in time, a fleeting feeling, a changing sky.

Back in the studio everything slows as I consider the sketches I have made and how to move to larger scale in a poetic, rhythmic style remaining true to my initial responses.
